Studio One, located behind Uprising Bakery, was opened by Zackari Watt and Marigold Pazar in February.
Watt produces works and acts for events and festivals, while Pazar is an actor and filmmaker.
“We needed a space to work on the projects we do, but we also wanted to create a space where we could work with other people,” Watt said.
“It’s our personal desire, but by proxy we understand a lot of other people like that kind of vision as well.
“We just wanted to extend that.”
Watt said the diminished presence of the Renew Newcastle in the CBD had seen creatives seeking new spaces to work.
“People having space and then not having it creates a necessity to a degree,” Watt said.
“Artists are always going to need space and I think Australia’s real estate conditions has probably influenced a lot of collaborative art spaces.”
Pazar said working alongside other creatives fostered more creativity.
“You really gain inspiration and we have a lot of different artists here, every bay is different,” Pazar said.
Current tenants include painters, a ceramicist, a photographer, a textile artists and a small manufacturing operation.
“Working around people who are doing a lot of different things, you can pick that up and work in collaboration,” Watt said.
“From my perspective, it’s great to have the resources of people working around me … it’s building a crew of people working on jobs over and over again.”
There are also six hot desks which can be hired by the week, and sometimes even by the day. So far, this has seen an architect working alongside designers and photographers.
“The desks really suit photographers, designers, graphic artists and people who work on computers,” Pazar said.
There is also a space known as the workshop space/gallery. It has already been used for an art exhibition, life drawing classes, photography sessions, workshops and prop making.
Watt said the project would not have been made possible without a supportive landlord, with whom they connected through Renew Newcastle.
“He loves what we are doing,” he said. “When we met with them he said ‘everything you want to do is exactly what we would want to do with the space’.
“For them it was the perfect match”.
Studio One will host an exhibition of works by Newcastle-based artist Rattle Tattle. The show opens on November 9, each Thursday to Sunday until November 18.
Hot desks at the stuidio are $45 per week. Find out about what else is happening at Studio One: facebook.com/studioonemaryville
