Despite a calendar full of events, dates and plans, Newcastle’s indie singer-songwriter is looking forward to everything that’s to come, especially the “weird and wonderful” Dashville coming up this weekend, and the ray-soaked Festival of the Sun in Port Macquarie at the end of the year.
Festivals bring a “special vibe” when playing, Turner said, and a chance to bring out costumes, props and just an all-round feeling of fun – something that’s definitely the 28-year-old’s speed.
“There’s just this different, special vibe that comes with playing festivals, so I’m definitely looking forward to those,” she said. “I’m a little nervous too though, they’re going to be pretty big.”
Big shows are definitely on Turner’s horizons, after her latest single Dead or Alive exploded to more than 400,000 streams on Spotify, and despite the nerves she has about some of the bigger events she’s slated for she’s still keen to trot out her own special style, and “feed off the vibe of those crowds”.
“Festivals have their own spirit, they’re a bit different to supporting a band or act, everyone there kind of just puts faith in the organisers that they’ve brought interesting acts so everyone gives you a chance,” she said.
“It feels like sometimes when you’re the support act for another band or person the crowd kind of feels like you should hurry up so they can see who they came for,” Turner added with a laugh.
Another part of the festival vibe Turner is looking forward to is the costumes, and reveals her and her friend Millie Shorter – herself a textile, fashion and graphic designer – have already begun work on making merchandise and clothing for Grace to wear.
“I love making things to go with my sets, I love all the design and crafts parts of music-making that come together with the writing and the performing,” she said. “It’s so much fun, we’ve already started work on some tote bags that I’ll take to the festivals, and we’ve got a few other things we have to work on as well.”
Turner will play Dashville this weekend, before appearing at FKA Festival in the Hunter Valley on October 13. She then travels north for Brisbane’s Against the Grain on November 3.
The Newcastle Conservatorium of Music graduate also has two supporting acts planned before Festival of the Sun – she will support Phil Jamieson in Canberra on November 29 and in Wollongong on November 30. FOTSUN will be held on December 14.
