The $10,000 prize was awarded to Snape for the work Nothin’ but Sky.
The welded steel sculpture was designed to focus the viewer’s attention on the expansive Australian sky in a moment of isolation.
“As one projects their head through the portal, one sees nothing but the sky,” Snape said in an artist’s statement.
FOUNDATION PRIZE
THIS year’s $10,000 Newcastle Club Foundation Art Prize has been won by John Morris for his works Newcastle and Harbour I and II.
Morris said he was “flabbergasted” to win and said the quality of entries were “absolutely brilliant”.
The works captured the city’s changing skyline from dog beach. One painting looks west down the harbour, the other looks south-west towards the Newcastle train station.
The Member’s Choice award went to Gwendoline Lewis.
