The Party Pies and Wagon Wheels from Newcastle will be two of 29 teams that compete in the championship for one of Australia’s fastest growing sports – ultimate frisbee.
“AMUC is a tournament we always look forward to because it is a chance for both men and women to compete on the same field, for the same titles,” tournament director and Australian Flying Disc Association president Simon Farrow said.
“With this year's field of 29 teams we are going to see plenty of rising athletes who can go to become stars in the sport.”
About 440 players in 24 teams from around Australia took part in last year’s tournament. More numbers are expected to turn out for this year’s championship which will be held at Tomaree Sports Complex in Nelson Bay from October 19 to 21.
Ultimate frisbee is sport that combines skills used in AFL, basketball, netball and American football in a seven-a-side format where the goal is to get the disc into the opposition's end zone.
It is also the only sport in the world that is self-officiated, with players making the calls on the field.
The Spirit of the Game awards are coveted almost as much as winning the match itself.
Newcastle teams Apple and Rhubarb Pie and Pie Wagon Second Slice faced each other in the final of last year’s tournament.
After a well played game, it was Apple and Rhubarb Pie who came out on top.
