Our Service – Pharmacy Health Assessment
The TWCM Health Check program has been designed to help customers gain a benchmark of their health, especially with cardiovascular health and helping with early identification of any potential issues such as their risk of Type 2 diabetes. Conducted by a trained health check practitioner, the health assessment includes a range of screening tests and assessments such as:
- Blood Pressure
- Cholesterol (includes high-density lipoprotein or HDL)
- Random Blood Glucose
- Body Mass Index (height/weight ratio) & Waist Circumference
- Body Scan (using InBody Scanner)
At the conclusion of the health check, a TWCM pharmacist will review the customer’s results and provide appropriate advice and if necessary, referral to a GP.
Improving our Customers Health
Screening and risk assessment is seen as a key component of Australia’s health strategy to reduce the burden of preventable disease. There is strong evidence that appropriate screening and risk assessment targeted at preventable conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, is cost-effective and significantly improves the health of our population.
Pharmacists, in close partnership with other healthcare professionals, have an extremely important role in providing better access to health promotion, prevention and early intervention.
At TWCM our pharmacists are fully committed to providing the best quality programs and services to help our customers better manage their health, and there are a number of things that we check during our health assessments.
- Blood Pressure
Screening for blood pressure can detect people who may be unaware of elevated blood pressure. It can also provide general information and awareness about Absolute Cardiovascular Risk and is appropriate for people over 18 years of age, without established diagnosis of hypertension, and especially those over 50.
- Cholesterol
Checking cholesterol measurements may aid the customer’s prescriber in assessing their cardiovascular risk. If borderline high or high for total cholesterol, or poor for HDL, the customer should be advised to speak to their GP for further testing and to have their overall cardiovascular risk assessed. Adults should have their blood lipids assessed every five years starting at 45 years of age, or 35 years for Indigenous Australians.
- Diabetes
The screening of random blood glucose may only be used as an indicator of risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and from this result customers may then be advised to see their GP for a measurement of fasting plasma glucose and or an oral glucose tolerance test.
- Waist Measurement
No matter what a person’s height or build, an increased waistline is a sign of a greater risk of developing serious ongoing health problems including chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and some cancers.
Waist measurement compares closely with Body Mass Index (BMI), however waist measurement is often seen as a better way of checking a person’s risk of developing a chronic disease.
