Sam Haifi's medical licence has been suspended for two months because of professional misconduct over the relationship with the young woman, from June 2015 to September 2016.

In its ruling, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal noted the woman told another doctor about the relationship, including that Dr Haifi initially resisted it due to his ethical obligations and age differences, but she continued to insist and offered a "no strings attached sexual relationship".

The woman had been seeing Dr Haifi for several years before she contacted him on Facebook, telling him she had feelings for him.

The pair met in person several times and exchanged messages before they began going to a motel, where the relationship turned sexual in December 2016.

At one point during the relationship she asked him for medical advice, and on another occasion he sat with her in a waiting room before another medical appointment.

After the woman admitted the relationship to another doctor, Dr Haifi notified the health watchdog, followed shortly after by a disclosure by the other doctor.

The medical board sought to cancel Dr Haifi's licence for nine months, but VCAT instead ordered he only be suspended for February and March next year.
