The 18-year-old was left with multiple burns to his upper and lower body after torching piles of school study notes at a property in Arcadia - a semi-rural suburb in Sydney's northwest - on Thursday morning.
A CareFlight rescue helicopter treated the boy as other emergency services arrived at the scene.
The teen was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
