The council recently announced the commissioning of Chimera, which will soar 12 metres above the Speers Point waterfront. Chimera will be accentuated by the stylised vessel and three mirror finished sails that will reflect the brilliant blue waters of our lake. The design is by award-winning Sydney artists Susan Milne and Greg Stonehouse, and was selected via an expression of interest process last year. The piece is funded using money awarded to council in 2008 as part of the prestigious National Thiess Riverprize. It is scheduled to be installed in March.
It’s hard to top the natural beauty of the lake, but I think the addition of Chimera and the new art pieces dotted around the lake, which are part of the CREATIVE Lake art trail, really complements the vista of the lake.
Public art has the ability to divide opinions, however its purpose is to enrich our community and environment. The CREATIVE Lake art trail for example has transformed our beautiful Lake foreshore into an outdoor gallery, activating the spaces along the lake edge.
