Formed in 1979 – and still boasting its original line-up 40 years later - The Choirboys will take to the stage on Saturday, January 26, at Speers Point Park, to perform some of their biggest hits, including Run to Paradise, Boys Will Be Boys, Struggle Town, and Never Gonna Die.
Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser encouraged the community to enjoy Australia Day by the lake with live music, delicious food, and great company.
“Lake Mac Festival provides the perfect opportunity for families and friends to come together on Australia Day,” Cr Fraser said.
Family-friendly activities throughout the day include an outdoor cinema screening of The Sapphires, local entertainment, and the annual Scouts Canoe Race.
Choirboys bass player Ian Hulme said the band still loved playing live, 40 years on.
“There’s absolutely no pressure to be or do anything other than just who we are,” Hulme said.
“With all the original members still around and playing together, it’s just an absolute rockin’ pleasure.”
The Lake Mac Festival crowd knows what to expect from the band, he said.
“Some great Aussie rock, some great Aussie songs, played the way they should be played – in Choirboys’ own inimitable style,” Hulme said.
“I love it. I can’t wait.”
The Choirboys recorded their first demos with a four-track studio setup in lead singer Mark Gable's bedsit in Church Point, on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
They had no idea those demos would lead to a recording deal with Alberts, let alone become nationwide hits.
Gable said there was one obvious reason why the band had endured.
“Because we bloody love it!” he said.
‘Choirboyus is exactly the kind of band that I always wanted to be in as a kid, so why not keep on doing it till you die? It is so much fun being in this band.”
The Choirboys will headline a line-up of live entertainment, including Absolutely 80s, My Generation, All Access 80s and Kaitlyn Simms, with a spectacular fireworks display finale at about 9pm. A food truck alley will also be set up.
