The Flyer is an interpretation of the iconic Newcastle Flyer express steam train that ran between Newcastle and Sydney from 1929 until 1970.
The 6500kg work, which was lowered into the site by crane, also consists of a row of two seats and a stainless steel replica timetable, all of which simulates a carriage behind the engine.
The artist behind the project, David Cianci, said his team scoured transport records and spoke to people familiar with the Flyer service for inspiration. More than 500 hours were invested in its design. It took more than 1000 hours to fabricate and assemble. The work was made on the Central Coast.
The $167,000 work was funded through the Newcastle Port Community Contribution Fund.
