St Philip's Christian College Cessnock claimed its first state cricket title after winning the grand final of the 39th Wiburd Shield at Mulbring .

The Wiburd Shield is a statewide competition for under-15 cricket teams from NSW independent schools.
The final was held just over a week ago, with St Philip's facing Macquarie Anglican Grammar School of Dubbo. Cambell Cleary top-scored for SPCCC with 35 runs and followed it up with two great catches, Jack Walsh scored 11 not-out and then took 2 for 21 with a catch as well, Ben Wood bowled tightly taking 2 for 8 and two catches, and Jack Roberts took 1 for 6. But it was the player of the match performance by Connor Thomson who took two catches and a tournament best of 5 for 25 that helped the college secure the title.
"It was indeed one of the most exciting games of cricket I have had the pleasure of watching let alone being part of through coaching," St Philip's coach Andrew Hall said. "In the end, we won the game by 30 runs with 11 overs to spare and I couldn't be prouder of what our boys have been able to achieve."
Athletes clean up at Little A's
A host of Hunter athletes competed in the Little Athletics NSW Track & Field Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre last week.
Athletes from the under-nine age group through to the under 17s progressed to the event after qualifying at the regional championships held in February. Athletics coach Gerrard Keating, who guides a number of the Hunter's top junior track and field athletes, said the two-day event was dealt a blow with "ridiculous" weather but many competitors still managed to achieve good results.
"They to cancel the jumps but everything else on the track went on," he said.
Ashlyn Blackstock won gold in the shot put and discuss, Tiahna Skelton won the 300m hurdles and came second in the 200m, Monana Monk won the 800m and 1500m, Sarah Pickering won her 800m race and Leroy Reid came second in the 100m and 200m. Elsewhere, Hannah Jarvis won the 13 years girls 1500m and silver in the 800m. Milli Windred came second in the 15 years girls 200m. Logan Ferguson was second in the 12 years boys 100m and Sam Govender was second in the 12 years boys 200m. Ty Leadbeatter came second in the 13 years boys 3000m.
