About 4.1 per cent of the city's population identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and I am passionate about helping improve Aboriginal people's livelihood and wellbeing.
This plan goes some way in assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gain better access to services and facilities across the city.
It also aims to build knowledge and understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal culture and heritage, which is so important to addressing the issues still facing Aboriginal people in our community.
The council has worked extensively with the community to develop the plan.
The plan outlines six key focus areas and more than 50 actions highlighting the successes and challenges of Aboriginal people living and working in Lake Macquarie.
Some of these actions include, continuing to fund cultural programs such as NAIDOC Week, assisting in developing an Aboriginal Cultural Centre, and advocating for ways to revive Aboriginal language and cultural practices.
The draft plan will be on exhibition until Tuesday, April 30.
It is available at all Lake Macquaire libraries and at the council's administration building at Speers Point.
