Construction on the drive-thru only KFC restaurant began at 80 Lambton Road, near Hungry Jack's, in June and is expected to be completed in November.
"Australia is one of the leading regions when it comes to uptake to digital products so we're really excited to be able to offer this world-first locally," a KFC spokesperson said. "Newcastle was chosen as it's the perfect test bed for such a concept given it's buzzing CBD and highly engaged residents."
KFC said the drive-thru only restaurant was a "completely new concept for the fast food industry" and that now was an ideal time to launch it after seeing online ordering through its smartphone app increase 100 per cent year-on-year for the last five years.
The drive-thru only KFC will require users to order and pay for their meal using the KFC app or website before arriving at the restaurant.
At the drive-thru, customers will enter a unique four-digit code generated by the smartphone app on a touchscreen receiver which will send their order to the kitchen where it is prepared, ready for collection.
For those who still wish to order in the traditional manner, staff will be available at two of the five lanes.
The other three lanes will be for pre-ordered and paid for meals only.
KFC said Newcastle's drive-thru only restaurant will be a trial for potential roll out across Australia.
