People who are overweight or obese tend to have higher blood pressure and blood cholesterol than others, and are more likely to develop other chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes or stroke.
Staff at Terry White Chemmart Hamilton strive to help combat these statistics and help people lose weight and improve their health through change to eating habits.
"Most people put on weight because they eat and drink more energy from food than their body needs or uses," pharmacist Mark Davis, from Terry White Chemmart Hamilton, said.
"The amount of energy (kilojoules or calories) your body needs depends on a number of factors including age, gender, your genetic make-up and how active you are. Some medical conditions and medicines can also play a role in weight gain."
The best way to reach and keep to a healthy weight, is to:
- have 'healthy eating' habits, to reduce energy intake (eat less calories of food)
- do 'regular physical activity' to use more energy
- 'kick start' your weight loss with programs that involve a combination of convenient meal replacements, higher protein meals and healthy snacks to meet your daily nutritional needs
People who are overweight or obese have too much body fat. Fat around the waist (visceral fat - 'apple' shape) is more of a health risk than fat around the hips & thighs ('pear' shape). Some simple guides for checking body weight, and the amount and distribution of body fat include:
- Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a measure of weight for height, calculated by weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m2)
- Waist circumference - a measure of fat around the abdomen (stomach)
- InBody scan - a body composition scan, which gives an overall score plus visceral fat levels, muscle composition, body water ratio, bone mineral content and more
Using more than one type of measurement is often recommended. Your pharmacist or doctor can help with these measurements and explain results.
Terry White Chemmart Hamilton offers a 12-week challenge aimed a helping people achieve weight loss and better health.
