Myself and NSW Landcare CEO Adrian Zammit, will mark the 20-year anniversary of Landcare at a family-friendly event on Saturday, September 14, at Teralba's Landcare Resource Centre, which I hope you can join us for.
Our city has a strong reputation as a community that cares for and works hard to preserve its environment and the Landcare volunteers are a significant driver of this work. In fact, on the weekend just gone I celebrated 25 years of the Sunshine-Silverwater Landcare group, who concentrate their efforts on a 28-hectare site, not far from Morisset. I would like to congratulate the group on their amazing achievements in regenerating hectares of bushland, providing walking tracks, boardwalks and re-establishing the area for local wildlife.
I am so proud to be part of the Landcare story. For over 20 years, Landcare has achieved so much in our region, evolving and growing into a movement of hundreds of thousands of volunteers across our City.
The network of volunteers has made Lake Macquarie a better place by directly working with the local communities to build more sustainable environments and agricultural practices. Without them, the organisation would not exist. In 2018 alone, over 800 volunteers helped manage invasive vegetation across an estimated 163,000sqm, and planted 11,300 native seedlings.
Congratulations to Landcare and all our very special volunteers on this incredible achievement. If you are interested in finding out more about the organisation or are keen to get involved visit lakemacquarielandcare.org
Women in business
This week I have the pleasure of speaking at the Women in Business Network Lunch. I am looking forward to meeting the many inspiring and driven women who are doing some wonderful things in business in Lake Macquarie.
We are lucky to have a number of women in leadership representing our community. They are amazing role models for local young women and girls.
I hope all the women present at this week's network lunch enjoy their time meeting new people and sharing their stories.
I cannot wait to hear from Michele Jones, who is the keynote speaker and the author of Live Your Best Life. I know we will all take away some of her inspiring messages and put them into action.
