Merewether's Ryan Callinan finished as the best-performed Australian male competitor at the ISA World Surfing Games in Japan despite bowing out in round four and losing in his first repechage heat.

Callinan, recent Tahiti Pro champion Owen Wright and Julian Wilson were Australia's male surfers at the event, which also featured Sally Fitzgibbons, Nikki Van Dijk and Stephanie Gilmore in the women's division.
While Wright and Wilson exited in round two and their following repechage heat, Callinan won through to round four before his run stalled.
He (10.2) lost to Morocco's Ramzi Boukhiam (13) and Brazilian Italo Ferreira (11.86) in the main draw.
He then scored 12.94 to go down to Kiwi Billy Stairmand (14.33) and Spaniard Vicente Romero (13.53) in round six of the repechage series.
Callinan, who is equal 11th on the championship tour with Wilson. earlier starred in Australia's Aloha Cup teams gold medal effort.
