More than 1500 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal netballers from across the state are expected to form 110 teams and take part in the tournament being staged at Charlestown Netball Courts on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27.

Taylor Martin MLC, the Liberal member of the NSW Upper House for the Hunter, said the tournament was an opportunity for Aboriginal women to showcase their netball talent and love of sport in a fun, competitive and inclusive environment.

"The 20^th tournament is expected to have a record number of entries, so don't leave it too late to get your team's registration in for what will be a fun and inclusive tournament," he said.

The annual netball tournament is aimed at increasing NSW's Aboriginal community's participation in sport and through a fun but competitive environment.

Since the first tournament in 1999, more than 9600 players and 690 teams have competed in the event.

Hosted in partnership with Charlestown Netball Association, the tournament is an inclusive event and teams are required to have up to three non-Indigenous players registered.

Tournament teams can enter into the open women, mixed, mixed 12-15 years, girls 12-15 years and junior under-12s.

Registration, through sport.nsw.gov.au/events/koori-netball-tournament, close on Thursday, October 17.

Teams must have a minimum of 14 players registered. Players can only play in their registered team. Each team must provide at least one non player umpire. The open women's teams will be graded at the tournament.

Acting minister for sport, Geoff Lee, encouraged all Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal netballers to register a team.

"Playing sport is a fantastic way to improve your health and fitness while participating in a community activity," he said. "The Koori Netball Tournament is a great example of how sport can bring people together in a healthy, positive way."
