That's why I love the Lake Mac Awards because they offer us an opportunity to recognise our amazing and often unsung local heroes who inspire us.
If you know of a Lake Macquarie resident or a group who uses their skills and passions to contribute to improving our city for the better, then make sure you nominate them for the city's highest honour, a Lake Mac Award. There is only a week left to submit your nomination, so please visit better.lakemac.com.au/Our-Council/Lake-Mac-Awards before Thursday, October 31
The categories for the awards are quite diverse and cover sports, the arts, environmental enhancement, volunteering and community contributions.
One category to note is the previously known award for Citizen of the Year, which has morphed into the Lake Mac Ambassador Award, which recognises a person for outstanding demonstration of leadership, skills, and community contribution.
Last year the Citizen of the Year was awarded to Kerriann Dunn, who was selected because of her work with the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and tireless involvement in a wide range of other community initiatives and programs.
The other prominent category is the Lake Mac Sports Star award. Last year the award went to Ty Swadling after his outstanding success on the world stage in 2018, when he took home a bronze medal in the men's synchronised event at the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships in Russia.
