I recall fondly in April this year, turning the first sod to mark the start of construction on the $2.3 million redevelopment of the Lake Macquarie Art Gallery. I remember the day well because it was a gorgeous morning and the view of the lake from the gallery was magnificent.

Seven months on and the redevelopment of the gallery is almost complete. It features a new entry, expanded exhibition space, temporary café and a deck on the southern side of the gallery.
I'm getting very excited to be able to share the revitalised space with our community. The refreshed facility will reopen from Saturday November 23, not only with a packed weekend of events and activities, but with a new name - the Museum of Art and Culture, otherwise known as MAC.
The new name and new space represents an exciting time for the arts scene in Lake Macquarie. It reflects an exciting vision to attract contemporary art exhibitions and programs over the coming years.
There will be three stunning exhibitions launching as part of the opening weekend, including us. (universal stories), we. (wiyelliko elements) and be. (Your Collection be remembered). The exhibitions herald the direction MAC will take to support the Arts Heritage and Cultural Plan by presenting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programing, curating contemporary art exhibitions, supporting new artwork to be made, and making the collection accessible to our community.
