Last week, our country experienced some of the worst bushfires in living memory. On behalf of the City of Lake Macquarie, I offer our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones, their homes, their property and their livelihoods.
I must thank the firefighters and volunteers who have worked tirelessly across many areas of the State and to the north in Queensland to fight the fires to save lives and homes.
The Rural Fire Service provides more than just an emergency assistance - it is a vital part of our community and provides support and advice at all times throughout the year.
You can support your local fire brigade by attending one of their community events or donating directly to a local fire station. To find out more about how you can support the NSW Rural Fire Service, visit rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/support-your-local-brigade.
Staying safe at our beaches
We are privileged in Lake Macquarie City to have many beautiful beaches and waterways on our doorstep. With the weather warming up, it's no surprise that people are getting out on the water and enjoying our stunning coastline, but please swim at patrolled beaches, between the red and yellow flags and if there is a 'beach closed' sign or you don't see the flags, please stay out of the water.
Our Professional Beach Lifeguards are on hand to help keep you safe while in the water, so please follow their advice and directions when spending a day at the beach.
To ensure your child is confident in the water, Council offers a number of swimming programs at our Lake Mac Swim Centres. Our professional Lake Mac Swim Centre staff teach essential water safety skills to help you, and your child, feel at ease in the water, with programs to suit all ages and skills levels.
