Veteran Real Betis winger Joaquin needed just 20 minutes to score his first career hat-trick and become the oldest player with a treble in the Spain's La Liga.
The 38-year-old Joaquin struck in the second, 11th and 20th minutes at the Benito Villamarin Stadium to lead hosts Betis to a 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao.
Soccer great Alfredo Di Stefano had held the record when he scored three times for Real Madrid in 1964 at the age of 37.
Betis' rivals Sevilla were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Osasuna in the evening game, as they dropped points to league leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Sevilla are third, three points behind the Spanish powerhouses, who have a game in hand against each other on December 18.
Joaquin came into the match against Athletic with three goals this season before doubling his tally on Sunday.
He scored with a shot from near the penalty spot, then hit a well-placed curling shot into the far corner and completed the hat-trick from inside the area after a counter attack.
"It's the first hat-trick of my life. I don't think it's going to happen again," Joaquin said.
"I've never been a goal scorer throughout my career, so I'm really proud to be able to get three goals against a rival like Athletic.
"Considering my age, it's not an easy thing to do."
Joaquin has played more than 600 league matches in his career, most of them with Betis - in a career that has included spells at Valencia, Malaga and Italian Serie A club Fiorentina.
His 51-game international career for Spain spanned 2002-07, including two World Cups and a European Championship.
It was a third-straight league win for Betis, who rose to 11th.
Inaki Williams (penalty) and Yuri Berchiche scored for Athletic to give them hope after having fallen 3-0 behind but they could not force an equaliser - the loss left them sixth.
Sevilla took the lead with an 11th-minute goal by Munir El Haddadi but Ezequiel Avila equalised for Osasuna just before halftime.
The hosts held on for a point despite playing a man down from the 61st after Oier Sanjurjo was sent off with a second yellow card.
Real Sociedad remain fourth although they dropped two points after a goalless draw at Real Valladolid.
Striker Angel Rodriguez scored a second-half winner seven minutes after coming off the bench to give Getafe a 1-0 win at Eibar and fifth place.
Leganes beat Celta Vigo 3-2 in their relegation scrap but both sides remain in the bottom three.
