Windows and shops throughout the city of Newcastle will be adorned with flowers made from recycled materials this week as part of an International Women's Day and ovarian cancer fundraising campaign.

As part of the Fearless Flowers project, close to 30 businesses, art spaces, restaurants and cafes in Newcastle's city centre will display flowers created by Timeless Textiles before they are sold as part of International Women's Day on Sunday, March 8.
Money raised through the flower sales will be donated to Hunter Medical Research Institute through Pink Meets Teal, the group founded by Newcastle Citizen of the Year Jill Emberson who died from ovarian cancer in 2019 following a three year battle with the disease.
"I am so moved that the city will be flowered with Fearless Flowers," Anne Kempton from Timeless Textiles, and the Fearless Flowers event director, said.
"This is a great big nod to our friend Jill Emberson and the importance of raising awareness of ovarian cancer."
The Fearless Flowers project was launched by Ms Kempton and Timeless Textiles in May 2019 during the first Pink Meets Teal activity on World Ovarian Cancer Day.
Since then, Timeless Textiles members who meet each Wednesday at the gallery, located within The Lock-Up, have been making flowers.
Many of the flowers have been made from recycled materials sourced and donated from local businesses, a group known as the Makers & Traders of Newcastle, including recycled aprons from Estabar cafe, felt home wares off-cuts from Make Space, garment remnants from High Tea with Mrs Woo and recycled paper menus from Momo Wholefoods.
Residents and visitors to the city are being invited to walk the Fearless Flowers Trail up until Saturday, March 7. A complete list of where walkers can find the flower displays is available through the City of Newcastle smartphone app.
There will also be a competition running on the app for walkers to decide who wins the best display. Those who vote go in the running to win a dinner for two at Subo.
The campaign culminates on Sunday, March 8 with the 2020 Fearless Flower Market auction.
The auction will be held at the Timeless Textiles Gallery from 10.30am to noon.
"Every cent from the market goes to the Hunter Medical Research Institute for Nikola Bowden's research. "There will be music, food and a celebration of being women. Everyone is welcome," Ms Kempton said.
