The song won't be officially released to streaming platforms until Friday but landed on iTunes on Thursday where it made an immediate impact, charting above the likes of English artist Freya Ridings and Australian legends Paul Kelly and Paul Grabowsky.
Back in March Jemima's song Patient reached No.2 on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart.
Both singles will appear on Jemima's debut five-track EP - out on September 4 - which was recorded by Angus and Julia Stone producer Paul Pilsneniks in Byron Bay.
As You Were was inspired by Jemima's childhood memories of rummaging through her parents' collection of '60s pop records in the garage.
The single sees the Byron Bay-based artist incorporating saxophone, sleigh bells, a 1966 Hofner violin bass and girl-group doo-wop harmonies into her breezy pop sound.
The Star asked Jemima to tell us more about her newest track:
- What's it about?
"As You Are" is about falling for someone but most importantly, accepting them for who they are. It's also about the decision to surrender to love and let yourself be vulnerable for that person.
- What's the inspiration behind it?
I wanted to make "As You Are" sound a bit like a 60s track, because those old love songs are not only beautiful and joyous but also capture that feeling of falling for somebody really well. So I wrote the song with that in mind and in the studio, we used saxophone, sleigh bells and a 66 Hfner violin bass (the same kind that Paul McCartney used) to really enhance that mood.
- How does it tie into your debut EP's overall theme?
The EP is very confessional and centres around that concept of things left unsaid. London is also something that ties all the tracks together. Every song on the EP is about experiences I had whilst living in London, and most of the tracks were written there too.
- Will there be any further single releases before the EP drops?
"As You Are" is the last single that will be released before the EP. The first single was "Patient", which was released in March and reached #2 on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart for Australia. Which was such a shock and a really amazing feeling. I'm so grateful to anyone who took the time to buy or listen to it.
